Device Info Record

Definition

A Device Info Record is a severely stripped-down, artificially constructed technical device object in SAP purposefully lacking maintenance capabilities, utilized predominantly by energy retailers explicitly to execute billing logic without assuming hardware management liability.

Business Purpose and Architecture

In a deregulated grid, a competitive energy retailer financially bills a consumer for electricity, yet they do not own, inspect, or manage the physical smart meter clamped to the house. The physical distributor owns it. Architecturally, the retailer cannot utilize standard SAP Plant Maintenance objects for assets they don’t own. Instead, they instantiate a Device Info Record. This acts purely as a hollow shell holding critical billing factors (like historical rates and consumption registers), enabling perfect billing calculations with zero maintenance overhead.
