Presort Key

Definition

The Presort Key is an organizational sorting identifier attached sequentially to raw Billing Line Items during document generation designed to mandate the absolute physical printing order of specific charges on the final customer invoice.

Business Purpose and Architecture

A printed bill requires visual logic—grouping all water charges together, separating tax subtotals, and forcing info lines to the bottom. Relying on the print engine to randomly sort thousands of items dynamically is an immense performance drain. Architecturally, S/4HANA handles this proactively in billing. The predefined Presort Key ensures that when the Print Workbench evaluates ERCHZ (billing document lines), the data arrives instantly pre-organized by Contract, Company Code, or custom logic matrices.
