Core ConceptsRate Type

Rate Type

Definition

The Rate Type is an SAP Utilities classification primarily assigned at the register or device level. Unlike the Rate Category, which defines “who” the customer is, the Rate Type defines “what” is being measured—such as On-Peak Active Energy, Off-Peak Reactive Energy, Gas Consumption, or Flat-Rate Reference Values.

Business Purpose and Architecture

The core business purpose of the Rate Type is to provide pinpoint precision on individual measuring devices without affecting the contract’s broad identity. Architecturally, the Rate Type works dynamically. A single installation may have multiple registers (e.g., day vs. night). By giving each register a different Rate Type, the system can pair them individually against the overarching Rate Category to output distinct rates inside the Billing Schema.
