Core ConceptsRate Category

Rate Category

Definition

The Rate Category is an SAP Utilities master data classification assigned directly to the Installation level. It defines the broad customer grouping for billing purposes—for example, “Household Rate”, “Commercial Rate with Demand Measurement”, or “Industrial Rate”.

Business Purpose and Architecture

The business purpose of the Rate Category is to ensure that entire macroscopic classes of customers receive the correct overarching pricing structure. Architecturally, it does not determine rates on its own; instead, it is cross-referenced with exactly what is being measured (the Rate Type assigned to the register). By combining a Rate Category (e.g., Household) with a Rate Type(e.g., On-Peak Energy), a specific Rate is determined seamlessly through a Customizing table.
